Education + Experience

I have over 20 years of professional experience in UX design, UI interaction design, front-end application development, multimedia design, print design and marketing. I design and develop from A-to-Z — from preliminary wireframing and high-fidelity mockups to final coding of “live” prototypes. This also includes implementation during the software development life cycle. I love working within Agile teams. My focus expertise is HTML and CSS, with an emphasis on responsive web design. I am also an expert with the Bootstrap Framework and am comfortable creating user interfaces within Angular.

I was educated in design with a BFA in Graphic Communications. My professional experience encompasses institutions and corporations large and small, such as Cengage, UnitedHealthcare, MOTOR Information Systems, Stewart Title, ExxonMobil, and Halliburton.

MOTOR Apps Suite
MOTOR Information Systems

The MOTOR Apps Suite is a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform designed to combine a cloud-based scalable technology infratructure with a host of web applications and services that can be customized to suit the customer's business needs.

User Research

Based on the UX process standard I developed for MOTOR, user analysis and research was conducted involving user demographic studies, customer interviews and user testing, as well as use-case analysis.

Personas and Use-Case Authoring

From initial user research, I proceeded with the development of personas (view PDF), wireframe process flows, use-case analysis as well as defining exploratory testing methods for user experience. Tools utilized were Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Balsamiq, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.

Coded Prototypes

With the technology architecture and UX defined, I was able to create mobile-to-desktop live prototypes (see PDF example) using the Bootstrap and Angular frameworks within the development environment. This facilitated more accurate user testing, validation, and greatly reduced development time of the UX presentation layer. A direct-to-development UX process ensures better cohesion and accuracy between UX design and UI development and greatly refines functional requirements within user stories for software developers.

MOTOR Selectline
MOTOR Information Systems

Selectline is a mobile, single-page web application for automotive repair facilities. It is designed to allow service advisors and technicians to communicate electronically without leaving their stations. It combines estimating, parts search and service information to labor operations, creating a simplified, efficient end-to-end workflow.

User Research

Using beta environment prototypes, several on-site field interviews were conducted to analyze auto repair shop work conditions and environments. Factors such as visual and auditory “noise”, ambient light, and spatial accommodation were considered to determine the ergonomics of the working environment. These metrics significantly influenced interface elements such as color, font shape and size, display contrast and touch parameters.

UX Design

Research revealed that the interface required a visual distinction between the Service Advisor and the Repair Technician, the two main user personas. While the Service Advisor was usually working within the front office on a desktop computer, the Repair Technician was within the less ideal space of the automobile repair bays. The Service Advisors required a large screen with careful hierarchical consideration for high information density, while the Repair Technicians required very low density of information with very high clarity of content.

UnitedHealthcare Healthcare Exchange (view PDF)

UnitedHealthcare required a new healthcare exchange portal which provided customized coverage for individuals and their families. The user experience needed to easily communicate the intricacies of healthcare insurance coverage to the widest cohort of the US population. The challenge was to also present a condensed view that summarized coverage as the user traversed this complex enrollment process.

UHC Unite (view PDF)

First introduced at the 2014 International CES, Unite (released as myEasyBook) was a pilot prototype designed to provide instant online appointment booking for UnitedHealthcare members with high-deductible healthcare plans. It allowed users to pay for a wide variety of medical appointments up front using their HSA, HRA or credit/debit card. The prototype was responsive from tablet to desktop using the Bootstrap framework. UnitedHealthcare's myEasyBook was a 2014 CES Editors' Choice winner from USA Today.
